Volkswagen (VW) is a German automobile company that was founded in 1937 during World War II.  It was at this time Volkswagen created the body of what would eventually become the Beetle – the first car ever designed with the use of a wind tunnel.  The Volkswagen car that would eventually become the Beetle went through an earth-shattering one million miles before it was determined to be finished.  Unfortunately for Volkswagen, production of civilian cars halted in 1939 due to World War II.  In 1945, the Volkswagen production plants in Wolfsburg were seized by American forces, and handed over to the British.  Volkswagen’s future was unclear – production was re-established by an English Army Major Ivan Hirst and his associate, Heinrich Nordhoff.  Volkswagen’s later success in the late 1940’s-1950s are attributed to him.  The 1950s included the introduction of the Volkswagen Type 1 (now known as the Beetle or Bug), the Volkswagen Cabriolet, and the Volkswagen Type 2 Van and Camper.

From 1948-1960’s, Volkswagen became an economic necessity for West Germany.  Volkswagens were first sold in the US in 1949, but only were able to sell two automobiles there the entire year.  By 1955, the amount of Volkswagen Type 1(Beetle) sold in the US reached one-million.  As the Beetle was losing popularity in the 60’s, Volkswagen released the Type 3 Notchback and VW Squareback.

The early 1970s were a difficult time for VW.  They did not sell nearly as many cars as they had in the 50’s and 60’s, and they decided to scrap some of their line, namely the VW Type 3 and  VW Type 4 vehicles.  VW decided to introduce more front-wheel drive and water cooled engines, like other companies had, and figured it would help them sell more cars.  In the early 1970’s, the Volkswagen Passat and VW Scirocco made their debut.

The 1980’s, 1990’s, and 2000’s have worked out very well for VW.  They have continued to expand their product lines, and have stayed consistently popular throughout the years.  The Volkswagen group currently runs VW, Audi, Porsche, Lamborghini, Bentley and many others.  Volkswagens are consistently winning awards, including, but not limited toMotor Trends Car of the Year, European Car of the Year, and World Car of the year.
