Why CV axles fail, and what to do about it.

Most Modern Front Wheel Drive and Front Wheel Drive Cars utilize at least one CV axle. The axle connects the transmission with the wheel itself.  The key part of the CV axle is the Constant Velocity Joint or "U Joint" using technology from the old days.  The CV joint itself allows the rotational force provided by the transmission to travel in a slightly different direction or in a different plane. This is required because the wheels in your car move up and down when you go over bumps, and the engine and transmission are stationary.

We are experts at CV axle repair on Subaru and Euro vehicles

As you can see in the pictures, the CV joint is contained in a rubber 'boot' which looks like an old fashioned bellows.  This boot keeps moisture out of the axle, and keeps grease or other lubricants IN.

The majority of the time, an axle fails because either moisture has propagated in or the lubricant has dried up or propagated OUT, causing corrosion and joint failure.  Most of the time the boot fails first with a small cut or tear, leading to catastrophic failure of the joint.

This is why we visually inspect the axle and boot with each premium oil service. We do our best to prevent relatively small issues from becoming larger ones.

CV Joint failure can manifest itself in many ways.  Most of the time, a failed joint will make a clicking or creaking sound when turning hard to the right or left at low speeds.    If you hear a sound like this, call for an appointment. We will inspect your vehicle or accompany you on a test drive. This failure is especially common on Subaru vehicles, but can happen to any FWD or All Wheel Drive vehicle.

If your CV axle has failed, our ASE technicians will be glad to assist, and get you back on the road FAST.

We make auto repair service easy to understand, and keep you and your car safe and reliable.
